Consider Covid salaries and accept 4% base pay – MoE PRO to GNAT

The Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education, Kwasi Kwarteng has urged the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) to accept 4% base pay for 2021 and 7% for 2022 increment proposed by the government.

Mr Kwarteng appeal comes after members of the National Association of Teachers described the government’s proposed 4% base pay for 2021 and 7% for 2022 as an insult adding that they will not accept such a low increment.

According to GNAT, they proposed a 15% increment for the 2021/2022 academic year but the government threatened not to employ any Colleges of Education graduates for the next two years if they go beyond the 4% for this year.

“We proposed a 15% increment for 2021 and 2022 but the government made it clear to us that if we go beyond the 4%, Colleges of Education graduates will not be employed for 2 years,” GNAT Accountant, Mr Isaac Nii Baah stated.

But, the spokesman for the Education Ministry in an interview monitored by begged the teachers to accept the 2021/2022 base pay as the government is committed to improving their conditions of service.

Mr Kwasi said the Association of Teachers should consider the salaries paid to them last year after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo directed for the closure of schools amid the outbreak of the global novel coronavirus.

“Within the period of Covid, we had some of our teachers that were in the house for a full one year but despite the virus, the government paid them so am saying they should consider the commitment and accept the 4%,” he stated.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) spokesperson assured the Nana Akufo-Addo administration at the appropriate time will ensure the conditions of service for all public sector workers are to their satisfaction.
