Terminate WAEC contract – GNACOPS to Gov’t

The Executive Director for Ghana National Council of Private Schools, (GNACOPS), Mr Enoch Kwasi Gyetuah is asking the government of Ghana to immediately terminate the contract of West African Examination Council (WAEC) for abysmal performance.

The Executive Director for Ghana National Council of Private Schools, (GNACOPS), Mr Enoch Kwasi Gyetuah is asking the government of Ghana to immediately terminate the contract of West African Examination Council (WAEC) for abysmal performance.
According to GNACOPS, the issue of examination leakages is becoming one too many in the country adding that the contract between the government of Ghana and WAEC is based on performance.

“But one cannot tell me that looking at the issue of examination leakages in this country, WAEC has performed well and that Ghanaians should continue to give them the sole mandate of conducting, marking and supervising examinations in this country,” he stated.

In a telephone interview with the Republic Press (RP), Mr Gyetuah said because the government of Ghana has given the monopoly of conducting, supervising and marking of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to WAEC they do what they like.
“It is high time the government of Ghana acted fast to avert this age-old phenomenon of examination leakages. I still don’t understand why one person will be in charge of everything about examination and almost every year examination questions still leak, this simply means either they are tired of their mandate or are becoming ineffective,” he stated.

He said it is time the government of Ghana thought of breaking the monopoly and involve a second party in the examination processes in the country because as it stands now activities of WAEC are creating a bad name for the country at the international level.
Mr Gyetuah said the only way to save Ghana’s educational assessment system is to sack WAEC for poor performance of their contractual duties as an assessment body linking it to what recently happened in the football circles in the country where the head coach of the Black Stars was sacked because of poor performance based on contract.

“We cannot continue like this because teachers, the government, parents and students are doing their part but then when it gets to what matters most, that is the conducting, supervising and marking of assessment then one body would mess everything up,” he angrily stated.

Mr Gyetuah therefore called on the government to immediately sanctioned WAEC or sack them.
