Renowned Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu has been arrested for wearing a Biafran outfit. Local media in Nigeria have reported that he was “dragged and assaulted” before being taken away by security forces. DW’s correspondent in Nigeria says authorities are yet to react to his request for comments.
The Nigerian Army (NA) has said its troops arrested Chiwetalu “while inciting members of the public and soliciting support for the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).”
While at the police station, Chiwetalu denied any wrongdoing, and said he was arrested while giving food to the needy.
Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has been released. This follows his apparent assault and detention by Nigerian army on Thursday — for wearing a Biafran outfit. While explaining what triggered the incident, Chiwetalu Agu told the army that: “this is a civil dress… I was sharing bread, not doing any campaign, no demonstration […] when they came.” The army has denied reports that Chiwetalu was poorly treated. The officials said he was arrested for wearing an outfit bearing the flag of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and inciting others to join the movement.
