Project Work: Lack of TLMs in teaching- Chapter four

CHAPTER FOUR

This chapter seeks to present and analyze the data gathered through the use of observation, pre – test and post test. It will also deal with the following headings, results, discussion of findings and others.

Analysis and discussion of findings

Through critical observation by the researcher, it was observed that one of the factors contributing to the poor performance of pupils in education is the lack of teaching and learning materials.

The tables below show the pupils performance after the lessons.

Reading comprehension (pre – test). Lack of teaching and learning materials

Table 3:

Marks Scored             No. of Pupils             Percentage (%)

                       5                                 0                                    0

                       4                                 0                                   0

                       3                                 3                                   10

                       2                                10                                  33.3

                       1                                11                                  36.7

                       0                                 6                                     20

                    Total                              30                                   100

From table 3, it is clear that lack of teaching and learning materials led to the low performance of pupils. Out of thirty (30) pupils, three pupils (3) representing 10% scored (3) out of (5) marks in the reading comprehension lesson. (10) pupils representing 33.3% scored (2) out of (5) marks. (11) pupils scored (1) out of the (5) marks and (6) pupils representing 20%scored zero (0) out of the five marks in the reading corporation lesson.

Table 4:          Mathematics (pre – test). Lack of teaching and learning materials.

Marks scored              Number of Pupils                     Percentage (%)

                       5                                 0                                           0

                       4                                 0                                           0

                       3                                 4                                        13.3

                       2                                 9                                          30

                       1                                10                                        33.3

                       0                                 7                                        23.3

                  Total                                30                                       100

From table 4, it was observed that, lack of teaching and learning materials was the major causes of the low performance of the pupils. Thus, Out of 30 pupils, (4) scored (3) marks representing 13.3%. (9) pupils representing 30% scored (2) marks out of the (5) marks. (10) pupils representing 33.3% scored (1) and (7) pupils representing 23.3% scored zero (0) out of the 5 marks.

Reading comprehension (post – test)

Appropriate use of teaching and learning materials

Table 5:

Marks scored              No. of Pupils             Percentage (%)

                       5                                 9                                    30

                       4                                 10                               33.3

                       3                                 5                                    16.7

                       2                                 4                                    13.3

                       1                                 2                                    6.7

                       0                                 0                                    0

                   Total                                30                               100

From table 5, it is obvious that, the use of teaching and learning materials improves the performance of pupils. Thus out of (30) pupils (9) pupils representing 30% scored (5) marks. (10) pupils, representing 33.3% scored (4) marks. (5) pupils representing 16.7% scored 3 marks. (4) pupils representing 13.3% Scored two (2) marks. (2) pupils representing 6.7% scored (1) mark and none of the pupils scored zero (0).

Appropriate use of teaching and learning materials

Table 6:

Marks scored             No. of Pupils               Percentage (%)

                                   5                                 10                          33.3

                                   4                                 8                           26.7

                                   3                                 7                           23.3

                                   2                                  2                             6.7

                                   1                                  3                              10

                                   0                                  0                               0

                              Total                                30                             100

Table 6 shows the marks obtained from the post test given to the pupils on a mathematics lesson. Out of 30 pupils, (10) pupils representing 33.3% scored (5) marks. (8) pupils representing 26.7% scored 4 marks. (7) pupils representing 23.3% scored (3) marks. (2) pupils representing 6.7% scored (2) marks. 3 pupils representing 10% scored (1) marks and none of the pupils scored zero (0).

From table 5 and 6, it is obvious and clear that, there was an improvement over table 3 and 4. It is clear that inadequate use of teaching and learning materials is the major factor contributing to the low performance of pupils in education.

Discussion of Findings

The most important outcome of the study shows that, when there is the use of appropriate TLM’s like word cards, pictures and other on the passage and a good approach by the teacher in mathematics, pupils will be highly motivated, excited, eager and pupils involvement in the lesson will improve.

The use of teaching and learning materials also stimulates relevant background knowledge about a topic and facilitates pupils interest in lessons. Furthermore, looking at the comprehension lesson, the use of appropriate teaching and learning materials in teaching reading comprehension  is an effective way of helping pupils to set reasons for reading. This aspect was noticed when pupils were asked to predict what the test was about, based on the teaching and learning materials used.
