Mainz’s recent poor run of form hit a new low on Saturday as they were hammered 5-0 away at Wolfsburg, leaving Bo Svensson’s men five Bundesliga matches without victory (D2, L3).

With that winless run behind them, Mainz no longer look assured of securing a first top-ten finish since 2015/16.

All five goals in last Saturday’s defeat arrived before half-time, so Mainz will surely be aiming to prioritise a less-sluggish start this time around. Early action has been a theme in recent contests with Bayern Munich, with Mainz scoring first and before half-time in each of the last three H2H clashes. That doesn’t necessarily guarantee success though, as only in this corresponding fixture last season did they avoid defeat (W1, L2).

Bayern’s Thomas Muller wasn’t shy in stating his side “really wanted” to secure their tenth straight Bundesliga title against fierce rivals Borussia Dortmund last weekend. They did just that, with the Bavarians’ 3-1 triumph over Dortmund serving as their fifth consecutive league win whilst securing Bayern’s 24th Bundesliga victory of the season – as many wins as they had achieved across the whole of the last campaign with three games to spare.

With the title won, coach Julian Nagelsmann has said he plans to give some fringe players more minutes in these remaining weeks of the season. However, he’ll likely still demand the efficiency which has seen Bayern score 3+ goals in four of their last five league matches, especially as just two goals here would see them break their own Bundesliga goalscoring away record of 47 in a single season.

Players to watch: Mainz’s Karim Onisiwo netted against Bayern in the reverse fixture, but that started a run of five goalscoring appearances in which his side failed to win the match (D1, L4). Opponent Serge Gnabry is in fine form and is now aiming to score in three straight Bundesliga matches for the first time since February 2020.

Hot stat: No side has conceded fewer first-half home league goals than Mainz (two), though no side has scored more away goals within the same period than Bayern (24).
